POSITION PURPOSE:

The primary responsibility of this position is to perform and oversee advanced non-destructive testing (NDT) inspections utilizing Zonal Automated Ultrasonic Testing (AUT) systems on pipeline girth welds. The Level II AUT Technician ensures all inspections are executed in accordance with applicable industry codes, client specifications, and regulatory standards. This role requires a high level of technical expertise in both Zonal AUT and conventional ultrasonic testing (UT) techniques.

In addition to performing inspections, the technician will actively mentor and support the development of Level I and trainee technicians through hands-on training and field guidance.

Due to the nature of this position there will be on-call and overtime requirements as well as some travel.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs and completes advanced NDT field inspections including Zonal AUT utilizing Phased Array Ultrasonic technology and Time of Flight Diffraction, with client, industry and company standards and policies.
  • Prepares and completes all necessary paperwork required in compliance with client, industry and company standards and policies.
  • Ensure all equipment is set up, calibrated and functional in alignment with client and company procedures.
  • Material verification and experience with Calibration Block design
  • Applies testing criteria in accordance with applicable specifications for advanced NDT methods.
  • Provides guidance, training and mentorship for the continuous development of the Level I and Trainee Technicians in compliance with industry codes, standards and procedures.
  • Actively promotes and proactively models the company’s focus on safety when interacting with all current and future employees and clients.
  • Strong commitment to quality inspection and reporting.
  • Represents Applus with outside groups, regulatory bodies, associations, and clients.
  • Adhering to organizational policies and procedures, including but not limited to Applus Code of Ethics and Confidentiality Agreements.
  • Other duties may be assigned as deemed necessary.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Firmly adheres to the values and ethics of Applus. Exhibits honesty, discretion, confidentiality, and sound judgment.
  • Strong technical knowledge and understanding of advanced NDT techniques, services and procedures. Pipeline integrity experience preferred.
  • NDT past experience and certification using AUT, UT and MT, PT methods preferred.
  • Ability to set up, calibrate, test, interpret and evaluate findings on using Zonal AUT equipment for advanced methods in compliance with codes, standards and procedures.
  • Thorough understanding of technique specific safety and operational field requirements regarding safe work practices and procedures.
  • Ability to read technical documents and procedures and apply them in the field.
  • Acquire and maintain the necessary certifications to service clients.
  • Excellent report writing and review skills.
  • Excellent customer service focus, ability to quickly build strong working relationships with business partners and colleagues.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills matched with the ability to negotiate and build relationships with key stakeholders.
  • The ability to adapt in a high pressure and high production environment while managing competing priorities with minimal supervision.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Required Certification in Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT), certifications in Time-of-Flight Diffraction (TOFD) a plus.
  • (ASNT-TC-1A) Level II certification in UT as a minimum.
  • >5 years’ experience in NDT inspection with a strong focus on advanced NDT methods.
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment background check / drug screen.
  • Must have valid driver's license and clean driving record.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Required to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid and dry/arid conditions in temperature extremes and inclement weather.
  • Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials in various working environments.
  • Commonly exposed to walking on slippery or uneven surfaces.
  • Occasionally required to work in noisy/loud working environments especially on project sites.
  • Required to work overtime during the week and weekend depending on project scope and work volume.
  • 80% travel
  • Working conditions will vary between project locations.
  • Ability to lift 50lbs repetitively
